The Tear

As we calmly chatted on the upper deck of the boat after dinner, somewhere between Komodo Island and West Nusa Tenggara, someone noticed a small tear in the canvas overhead.

We had begun to enter choppy water. The wind, sudden and powerful, thrashed against the taut covering.

The small opening in the canvas grew. It was now the focus of our attention as we heard it rip apart and flap about. We called to alert the crew, who methodically pulled the entire tarpaulin down.

Unveiled, the clear night sky brilliantly came into view. We stared in awe. The more celestially knowledgeable among us began pointing out constellations I had only previously seen in a planetarium.

Though we would miss that overhead covering, which had shaded us from the scorching mid-day sun, we continued to stare upward, contentedly, admiring the twinkling heavens.
